Yeah. I believe the plan is to spend our first turn resupplying. Grabbing Vulneraries or an extra weapon, whatever floats thy boat.

Only classes that get magic resistance are Pegasus Knights (AHAHAHAHAH!) and the magic-using classes. But you can't guard against magic, so...
Mages are our first target, folks! MAGES!

Gah. The only Nation that would let me boost both Strength and Defense is also a nation that would boost my rate of Magic growth per level up, which is not just useless but actively detrimental. I think I'm sticking with my Ludein plan for SPD and DEF, that way I'm only in danger of getting double attacked by Sandal Myrmidons. Who I really shouldn't be fighting to begin with.

I think your nation only boosts the two stats you pick?
And I'm mostly going to be shooting casters of any sort, as my attack goes through blocks.

Your Nation choice doesn't just raise two stats, it also impacts your odds of growth in all THREE of its related stats upon future level ups. Say you're a Fighter who had a 50% odds of gaining a point of Strength on level up, Sandal might boost that to a 60%. Something like that.
So, class and nation determine your odds of stat growth in assorted areas.

But Fiaryn, you don't have Magic. So your Magic will not grow. So just your STR and DEF.
...So you lose a bonus statup possibility. I take it that statups are random in FE games, and have a percentage chance of going up each level?

Correct. As stated in the OP, you will randomly stat up in four different stats per level up. Which four those will be will be impacted by your class and nation choice.
And there are a total of six stats applicable at any time. HP/STR/SKLL/SPD/DEF/RES

Ah, so you don't lose out then, if you always have four points at statup. I was noticing that the statgain in FE:SS seems fairly random. I think Ross got +1 HP, +1Luck one level. I was like FFFFFFFFFFFFF.
I guess that my key stats are Str, Skl and Spd thanks to nation and class. I can live with that.
You going to be a manly fighter or a terrifying pirate, you decided yet?

I'm going Fighter. It's probably more practical in the long run. The real question now is what Nation/Stat Up to take. I'm still tempted to go SPD and DEF as part of Ludein. I don't believe the NPCs have "nation benefits" so this would grant me (at least for the moment) immunity to the possibility of double attacks.

Chen what are your thoughts on a Ludein Fighter? Total stats: 18 HP/5 Str/2 Skill/3 Speed/5 Defense/0 Resistance That's fine. Brings some hurtin' to random cavaliers, pegasus knights and dragon knights trying to charge through our zone. With that HP and defense you can block attacks more easily than pirates which is a definite plus. You obviously want to avoid sword users, which shouldn't be a problem. Just don't attack them. Even without triangle advantage your accuracy is 90 minus whatever evade they have (+/- 20). Also, Quoth has raised interest to join the team. He'll be a Troubadour, our second main healer. Best to PM him and inform him about this board.

I thought Quoth was a lady!
Okay, I'll toss a PM his way. Her way. FFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFF.

uh... I blame the English language for lacking a gender neutral pronoun.
I'll start in F if there are others who will accompany me and possibly block attacks. *cowers*
