So, here we are. In the interests of creating a balanced party, we should figure out what we want to play as here.
I suggest we have a couple of dedicated melee fighters, a magic-user, archer, and healer as a base. We want to cover all weapon-triangle bases, but I'm not sure that the magic-triangle bases need to be covered - though we can do that if a healer ever gets promoted. However, it might be better to have a Monk (light magic user) and try to get them promoted so they can use Staves, but... yeah. I'm not sure.
For the melee roles, I think a Myrmidon as a sword user would be good for the double attacks. For the axe/lance user, perhaps a Knight (starts with Lance, gains Axe on promo) or a Cavalier (starts with Lance and Sword, gains Axe on promo), or even a Fighter (starts with Axe, gains Bow on promo). Knight, Fighter and Cavalier are both more tanky than Soldier - Soldier seems to be the Lance equivalent of a Myrmidon or Pirate. Cavalier seems to be the all-rounder, while Knights hit harder and take more damage.
Shamans start with Dark, and learn Anima on promo. So if we have one of those, we only need one more magic user to get everything. A Monk starts with Light, and gets Staff on promo, but a Mage starts with Anima, and gets Light AND Staff on promo. If we think we can deal with just healing items to start with, I'd vote for Shaman and Mage. If we want healing at the start though, Cleric or Troubador.
